Did you know that you have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home? With so little time, families often run to the curb with nothing. Can you imagine how horrifying it is to look up and realize your home is gone? • That is when the Red Cross is there. Each year, we respond to more than 60,000 disasters— the majority of which are home fires. In our community alone, we respond to an average of 130 fires every year. • Following these tragic events, families often don’t know where to turn. That’s when the Red Cross arrives. We help them answer questions like • Where will we stay? • How will we eat? • How do we begin rebuilding our lives? • We help families get through those first horrific days by providing financial support in the form of a special card, called a client assistance card, that can be used to purchase immediate needs like food, prescriptions and diapers, as well as secure a safe place to stay.
Seven people die in home fires every day, most in homes that lack smoke alarms. The Red Cross is working hard to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by these fires. Thanks to generous donors, like you, over 783 lives have been saved by this program!
