Help schools fight climate change
Donations are 100% matched and 100% tax deductible. Your donation will empower schools worldwide to become more sustainable, equitable and climate resilient through the Sustainability Tracking and Roadmap Tool (START).
The Green Schools Alliance (GSA) was recently awarded a $250k matching grant to develop and launch START. With our planned fundraising events canceled due to COVID, we are urgently seeking alternative ways to match our grant so that START can be fully ready for use when schools reopen. Your contribution will expand the reach and capabilities of START.
Schools can and should be hubs of social and environmental sustainability in communities worldwide. As a developer and model of sustainability, schools can be a catalyst for lasting systemic change. Schools are our roadmap to the future, training the current and next generation of leaders to transform behavior, markets, and policy, increase community resilience, mitigate climate change, and prepare our world to think and act in new and creative ways so that present and future generations can thrive.
START, a high-performance digital platform, was created by schools for schools, to make their journey towards “Whole School Sustainability” simple, affordable and transparent.

START is a long-needed standardized tool designed to help schools methodically create a more healthy and sustainable environment through their Educational Programs, Organizational Culture and Physical Place. The START framework is the result of a multi-year, national effort to identify the full scope of Whole School Sustainability while creating a tracking and roadmap tool that allows schools to quickly and simply assess their sustainability programs.
Built on the award-winning Maalka platform, START encompasses over 50 sustainability actions that are implemented across Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced tiers, which include clear indications of each action’s Cost, Difficulty and Impact. Each action has “How To” guides, student activities, and peer discussion forums where users are empowered to meet their sustainability goals and can share best practices to help other schools and stakeholders on their journey towards Whole School Sustainability.
We are so excited to share START with you!

1. Opening up our Green Cup Challenge to millions more students
GSA’s popular and long-running Green Cup Challenge™ is a student-driven program that empowers K-12 students to measure and reduce their energy, waste and water usage, while raising awareness about climate change and uniting school communities around a common goal. By digitizing and automating the Challenge, literally millions more students will be able to participate and become sustainability champions. Not only do Green Cup Challenges activate student engagement, but they have a significant real-world impact. Our Energy Challenges have to date saved over 120 million kWh, eliminating up to 180 million lbs of CO2! Your donation will enable us to automate and integrate the Green Cup Challenge into START so that ALL schools can participate, resulting in exponential greenhouse gas savings!
2. Purchasing Solution: Making sustainable products more affordable for schools
The START Purchasing Solution drives down the cost of sustainable products for schools, helping them to meet their sustainability goals. By leveraging the power of data, vendor relationships, and the aggregated purchasing power of schools, the Purchasing Solution saves an average of 20% on product prices. Your donation will enable us to integrate this function into START so that schools have a marketplace of price-reduced, eco-friendly products at their fingertips as they integrate START’s 50+ sustainability metrics.
