The Malibu Community Labor Exchange (MCLE), founded 27 years ago, is a community-created non-profit organization that provides an organized and supportive place for people to hire and be hired, creating opportunities for the unemployed to build independence and self-sufficiency through work while supporting the needs of the local Malibu community (https://www.malibucommunitylaborexchange.org/). In 2019, 3332 jobs were provided to hard working men and women registered at the MCLE, many of whom supported cleanup efforts after the Woolsey Fire.
We operate on a shoestring budget, about $80,000 per year, the majority of which goes to employing our devoted and huge-hearted full-time director, Oscar Mondragon (six days a week for 27 years). A board of local community members also volunteer their time to support the day-to-day operations and raise the funds needed to keep the MCLE serving the Malibu community and supporting the men and women who depend on it as a springboard towards their financial independence and well-being.
Earlier this year, with the MCLE closed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, we reached out to our friends for help. The community responded generously, and the $60,000 we raised went directly to worker families who are all living on the edge. None of the money we raised went into our operating budget.
Today, we find ourselves in a difficult financial situation. We recently learned that our funding from the city was reduced by 60%, which has critically impacted our operating budget. Therefore, while we usually send out a fundraising letter in November, we are contacting you early this year because our needs are immediate.
We have received generous matching funds of $35,000 towards our immediate goal of $80,000 from Jane and Phil Bellomy, an anonymous donor, Cindy Miller-Perrin and Robin Perrin, and the Cindy Colburn family. Anything we raise beyond the operating budget for the year will be put towards future operating funds and, we hope, an endowment that will contribute to the long-term financial stability of the MCLE. If you or anyone you know might be interested in making a larger donation to endow the MCLE, we would love to hear from you at firstname.lastname@example.org. When you make your donation, please consider adding a note letting us know something about you and why you support the MCLE!
