2020 is the year we learned to mourn and organize. As we reflect and gear up to win crucial battles in 2021, we hope you’ll make a year-end donation to support the Workers Center. Charitable donations up to $300 are tax deductible this year even if you don’t itemize!!
A sample of what your support helped us accomplish in 2020:
With allies, we successfully demanded COVID guidance specific to the agriculture sector, where workers continued working this spring unprotected. We defended funding for essential legal service programs for low-income NYers, and we launched a weekly FB Live event in Spanish to share the latest news on COVID, worker rights and immigration.
We joined a statewide coalition of essential workers to draft the powerful NY HERO legislation to strengthen worker protections (to be introduced in January!), and we successfully inserted language to include employer provided housing and transportation as part of the worksite. We joined the Excluded Worker Coalition to #MakeBillionairesPay, and we’re convinced that 2021 will be the year we win historic victories in reshaping NY’s tax structure.
We celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Green Light victory granting immigrant NYers equal access to drivers licenses. “It’s changed everything” said one of our members who received his license in November.
We amplified the voices of our members, assisting 25 farmworkers to share their testimonies to the NY Wage Board on the issue of overtime pay for farmworkers and bringing the stories of farmworkers to the public.
We launched a massive COVID relief direct assistance response. With the help of local allies like the Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network, we distributed thousands of face masks and cash cards worth $100,000 to community members excluded from public benefits, thanks to financial support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Justice for Migrant Women and the NY Immigration Coalition.
With support from Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, LULAC and Food Chain Workers Alliance, we put laptops and tablets into the hands of 10 members to support participation in digital organizing spaces and remote schooling.
Please help us expand our team and our presence this year as we bring on 2 new organizers to amplify the voices of low-wage and immigrant workers and win victories in 2021!
