Learning to swim should NOT be a luxury provided only to families who can afford it.
Yet, unfortunately, it is.
Oaklantis, a non profit in Oakland, is leading the movement to reduce this INEQUITY by expanding ACCESS to swimming. Oaklantis has a “nobody is turned away”policy. Meaning, EVERY child that wants to learn to swim, can. EVERY child who wants to join the swim team can, regardless if they can pay or not.
Oaklantis is also the ONLY swim program located in East Oakland - an under resourced community, home to some of the lowest-income, highest-crime neighborhoods of the entire Bay Area.
I grew up in Oakland, and my twins have been swimming with Oaklantis for three years. We picked Oaklantis because I wanted a place located in my community where I would see people who look like me and my children.
Over the past five years, Oaklantis has seen both the demand for the program and the requests for financial aid grow.
Oaklantis is more than just a swim program. Oaklantis provides kids the chance to learn the life skill of swimming, to see themselves as athletes, to mature into community- minded adolescents, and if they want, to see swimming in college as an attainable goal.
Imagine a world in which ALL kids have the opportunity to participate in an activity that encourages them to explore their strength - both physically and mentally, that helps them build their confidence, discover what it means to be a teammate and most importantly have fun.
Please join the movement to provide this experience for MORE children by making a donation today. Every donation will go to provide aid to families who would otherwise not be able to afford Oaklantis. Every single gift, no matter the amount, makes a difference and is one step further toward reducing inequity.
