For those of you who traveled to Rio and volunteered with us, you definitely heard of – and very likely met – Tia Bete. She is an amazing leader in her community, and she has been working with Community in Action for 10+ years. To this day, she continues to be our strongest and most reliable partner in the Complexo do Alemão, where we launched our work in 2004.
Tia Bete opened the Oca dos Curumins cultural center from a house in Alemão in the late 1970s, and over the years she has transformed the location into a social outreach oasis in the favela. It has always been a safe place for residents (of all ages) to partake in educational, athletic, and empowerment activities.
Community in Action helped build an addition to the center in 2017, but the overall structure now needs to be repaired. With heavy rainfall from the most recent wet season, part of the roof is caving in, making one of the rooms and the rooftop area a major health and safety concern. As a result, activities have been paused.
We are launching this fundraiser to help fix the roof, and do further work to the community center to ensure the space is usable and offers flexibility for the wide range of activities, including: literacy and computer classes, chess classes, capoeira, tutoring services, arts, access to a small library, and much more. This space has continued to be a safe haven for children and adults in the community despite the pandemic, and it's critical that it can continue to offer the much needed social outreach services.
Materials for fixing the roof are approximately R$ 11,700 (USD$ 2,100). We are setting our target for the fundraiser at USD$ 5,000 to contribute to this and enhance other areas of the Center, including but not limited to the bathrooms, the office, and the main communal area designated for the main activities.
We need your support to make this a reality and help Tia Bete – any donation amount is appreciated. Thank you in advance!
