Who: Jon (guide) and Bathishig (athlete) – the Achilles Mongolia Team (in part) – both pictured above
Where: Berlin (Marathon Tour) and the parks and forests around Ulaanbaatar (Hiking & Fitness Program)
Agi and I are raising funds in support of people with disabilities in Mongolia. We are doing this as a way to help build community through fitness with the most vulnerable among us. Our contributions go directly to the Mongolia Chapter of the NYC-based non-profit Achilles International. This year, we are supporting two great programs.
First, as in previous years, I have been paired with a young athlete with disabilities – Bathishig, an arm amputee – as a co-sponsor and guide in the Berlin Marathon on September 29, 2019. Beyond athletics, I’ve been able to mentor and advise Bathishig in his first job search, helping him to earn a full-time professional gig.
Second, we are seeking to help sponsor the Achilles Hiking and Fitness Program. This Program supports a wide range of people with disabilities – physical, mental, survivors of trauma or disease – at all levels of fitness. Participants meet almost weekly year round in Ulaanbaatar – even in the depths of winter’s freeze – to hike, eat, socialize, and confide.
We’ve set a target of $1,000 for each cause. Many thanks for your consideration in supporting people with disabilities!

Bathishig & Jon
Since early childhood Bathishig has lived as an arm amputee, resulting from an accident. As a young adult, Bathishig has struggled with low self-esteem despite having earned an undergrad engineering degree in 2018. Late last year, Bathishig completed his first marathon, but had trouble translating his athletic achievement into any professional entry point. However, with the help of mentoring and coaching provided through Achilles, Bathishig was able to secure his first full-time work as a junior engineer in June.
As an Achilles guide and sponsor, Jon agreed to support Bathishig on the condition he commit to both athletic training and life skills building. Through resume development, interview rehearsals, and job search assistance, Jon’s support has helped Bathishig to have the confidence to successfully find a job for himself. Athletically, Jon has been training with Bathishig with the goal of a 3:30 marathon time – a stretch for both, but potentially reachable. Outside his Achilles guiding, Jon is a husband and father of two who is currently working to design and finance a next-generation gold mine in Mongolia.
Established as an official Chapter in 2015, Achilles International Mongolia exists to enable people with disabilities to participate in mainstream running in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self-esteem and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life.
