Timmy Global Health is a nonprofit based in Indianapolis, Indiana, that works toward providing sustainable healthcare in the developing world. Tufts Timmy Global Health is one of about 50 university chapters across the country who fundraise, advocate, and travel in medical brigades to support various communities in Guatemala, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Nigeria, and El Salvador. Every January, Tufts Timmy sends a medical brigade of about twenty students and five medical professionals to Xela, Guatemala. It’s an intense week of mobile medical clinics with our local partner organization, 32 Volcanes, to bring healthcare to rural, indigenous communities.
Tufts Timmy Global Health seeks to build healthy futures in profoundly underserved indigenous communities surrounding the city of Xela. It is of the utmost importance that our brigade trip is not a finite, annual occurrence, but rather a part of our goal to sustain our impact in these communities and provide them with continuous attention.
Our fundraising efforts, which subsidize Asociación 32 Volcanes, provide resources to the communities we work with in our absence. Tufts Timmy is only one of several college chapters that will provide medical attention and relief to these same communities throughout the course of the year. This sustainable model is what makes Timmy unique, and allows our efforts to resonate in a way that the work of most medical brigades do not.
We believe that our story is one that should be shared. It is key to build a narrative to share within the Tufts community as well as in the greater Boston and US communities. By sharing our experience, we garner support and spread the stories of the people that we seek to serve.
