You could change, even save a life.
Imagine a fourteen-year old Zambian boy born with a severe disability. His aspiration is to go to college. But his parents can’t afford the surgery that could change his life. Even if they did, the medical facilities in his village are woefully understaffed and have inadequate surgery capabilities, assistive devices and medications.
Add to that the fact that educational facilities in Zambia are overwhelmed with students; in many places teacher to student ratio is 100 to 1. And classes are often held outside, under a tree, because there is no space. So, although this young man has a bright mind and a desire to succeed, his future is bleak.
We take the accessibility of good healthcare and a good education for granted in this country. First-class hospital and emergency clinics with the most up-to-date medical equipment, supplies and medications are a short drive away. Ivy-league colleges and universities exist in almost every state, offering scholarships and grants to expectant students. Not so in developing countries. In many areas of the world, people are forced to accept the reply, “Sorry, we just don’t have the resources.” The tragedy? In the U.S., unopened medications that could save a life are thrown away. Older medical equipment is warehoused and replaced with newer models. Computers are thrown into backrooms because of new technology. And perfectly good, but used, instruments, desks and tables become fodder for the waste bin. Yet these resources could transform communities in underserved areas of the world.
PLEA is a nonprofit organization that plays a vital role in helping to collect and deliver used but serviceable medical and educational equipment and supplies to developing countries.
CURRENT GOAL: PLEA currently has a 20 ft container ready for loading to send to multiple countries in Africa in 6 months. It will cost $15,000 to send it from U.S and about $25,000 to collect it from the sea port in Africa, and then additional money to locate it where it is needed.
FUNDRAISING GOAL: PLEA has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 to fund the logistics to collect unwanted medical and educational resources from their partners and donors here in the U.S. These efforts require transportation for pickup and drop-off, storage and warehousing, administrative assistance to track and log donations, and shipping and handling. Won’t you help that fourteen-year old boy and others like him achieve their dreams to not only get healthy but go to school?
Your gift will provide the necessary funding to bring life-saving and life-changing medical and educational resources to underserved communities in Africa. Save a life. Change a life. Make your gift today.
