$2,500 is all it takes to fund 6 months of care for one of these kids.
For many of us, these past years have presented many opportunities for reflection, conversation and introspection on racial justice and equity in our communities. To me, giving our youngest and most vulnerable kids a fighting chance at challenges they were born into and don't deserve is literally the most important thing we can do in our communities.
Jubilee JumpStart is a very special childcare center in DC. Every single teacher there supports kids and families with love, respect, and a deep-rooted conviction for social justice. Parents get coaching on parenting and life skills, kids get research-backed age-appropriate teaching and a giant heaping dose of hugs, messiness, goofiness and play. And so, so, so much love.
During the traumatizing early days of the pandemic, many of these kids were in very scary situations as their families faced illness, severe loss of income, and heartache. From the beginning, it was the Jubilee JumpStart teachers and staff who stepped in and kept these families going-- from food delivered to porches, to teachers' virtual hugs and check-ins with their kids each day, to serving as a lifeline of information and support to worried families.
Last week, I paid a visit to the 47 little kids who kept smiling, hoping, and trusting the adults around them (parents and staff) who themselves were struggling and I was AMAZED (and a little tearful) at those little faces still so full of hope and laughter and trust.
We have to keep this center going. Next week, they're holding a (mostly) virtual fundraiser. Instead of asking you to attend, I'm just asking you to contribute here instead.
Let's band together to support 1 kid for 6 months!
Your support will help Jubilee JumpStart pay for:
6 months' support for the additional classroom staff in one child's classroom needed to make sure the classroom exceeds the minimum ratio of teachers (super important for any kid, but especially these kids)
6 months of family "wraparound" services like parent coaching and counseling to one child's family and caregivers
6 months of supplies, from subscriptions to the country's leading early childhood curriculum to all the fun, goofy stuff that this child will get to play with and use
Next week, we are holding a (mostly) virtual fundraiser for this place that is SO close to my heart. I know many of you will be too busy to attend (let me know if you can, however) so instead let's take a shortcut to giving by supporting this campaign.
Take a shortcut to giving.
Contribute here so that we can all band together to fund one kid for 6 months!
