The Safety Net Project at the Urban Justice Center is raising funds to support the work of Upper West Side Open Hearts to advocate in support of homeless residents living in hotels on the Upper West Side and in other parts of NYC.
In their own words: “The UWS Open Hearts initiative formed in August to support the temporary COVID shelters at The Lucerne, Belleclaire, and Belnord hotels. The Open Hearts Initiative provides direct material and moral support to shelter residents, while also working to center the needs of those directly impacted by homelessness in the conversation over the temporary shelters. Together with shelter residents, they have created a transformational model for community-shelter engagement that has been by the Coalition for the Homeless.
This work is critical because the fight to displace temporary shelters from wealthy, predominantly white neighborhoods has stark implications for the future of homelessness policy. The UWS Open Hearts Initiative has been fighting the misinformation, fear, and stigma that has been driving this effort. You can read more about their activities at .”
