Indigenous People of all ages continue to be the most underserved population in this country. 78% of all Native Americans live in urban areas such as Santa Fe, yet contrary to some people’s belief, they are NOT aided by the State or Federal Government once they leave their reservation, often for “opportunity” in urban areas. The Santa Fe Indian Center needs your support in 2020 to continue serving the needs of the Native American Community in Santa Fe County. During this time with the COVID-19 pandemic, our focus is to support the immediate needs and well-being of our community. Last week we handed out 100 bags of food and personal care items including shampoos, soaps, lotions, items for babies and seniors. We know the need will out way the demand and that’s why your support is absolutely necessary!
WE WILL PUSH FORWARD FOR OUR FUTURE - Once in the clear, we plan to have new and returning programs to serve Native Elders with Cooking, Nutrition, Exercise and Family game nights. We offer cultural programs such as beading and skirt making. We will continue to provide Emergency Financial Assistance for those in need. We will be serving Native youth through art and cultural classes, Family Fun Nights, and offering storytelling, and family native language films and crafts. Our Lecture Series also continues this year featuring Native documentaries, films, and cultural history. The 2017 Community Health Impact Assessment found that over half of all Native Americans living in Santa Fe experience food insecurity issues of hunger, having to ration foods and fear of not being able to provide food for their families. We help to address food insecurity through partnerships such as the NMDOH Senior Farmers Market Program and distributing food from Feeding Santa Fe and the Food Depot. Last year we served over 900 Native people with Emergency Financial Assistance, Food & Clothing, Referral Services, Programs and Community Events.
Please donate to the Santa Fe Indian Center so we can continue to serve the Native American Community. Thank you for your support!
Sincerely, Caren Gala, Director & The Santa Fe Indian Center Board
