You can stop Sunoco’s Dangerous Mariner East Export Pipelines by Supporting the “Safety 7” Citizens’ Legal Action!
We have exciting news that Protect PT and the Safety 7 are partnering to fight the dangers created by the Mariner East Pipeline across the state. The Mariner East Pipelines are the primary arteries to transport this dangerous fracked gas from the Western part of the state. The destruction is seen across our state from the fracking wells in Western PA to the export terminal at Marcus Hook in Southeastern PA. The highly volatile and dangerous products of the Mariner East Pipelines are not for energy but for plastics manufacturing overseas. Even residents who don’t live directly near the pipeline are still being impacted by it. It’s all connected.
Seven residents of Delaware and Chester Counties (in Southeastern Pennsylvania) filed a lawsuit with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to halt construction and operations of the dangerous and controversial Mariner East pipelines. They have been joined by 3 “pro-se complainants” who are representing themselves without an attorney. These brave residents are leading the charge to protect all of our communities, schools, and families from harm, and they need your help!
Independent technical expertise is critical to challenging Sunoco’s dangerous plan. During the final hearing the Safety Seven brought two engineering experts to the stand. The first expert, Jeff Marx, is a Senior Engineer from Quest Consulting who completed the Citizens' Risk Assessment in 2018. The second was Mehrooz Zamanzadeh Ph.D. Matergenics, who specializes in corrosion and failure analysis. Thomas Sniscak, for Sunoco, attempted to block Dr. Zee's testimony related to Mariner East 1 (ME1) corrosion, the 2017 Morgantown leak on ME1 and Sunoco's failure to follow their own integrity management plan. That motion was denied by Judge Barnes but it indicates how critical our expert testimony is to holding Sunoco accountable.
The hearing ended in October but the legal and expert work continues with the briefs to make our final arguments. There continues to be examples of Sunoco's blatant disregard for the people, resources and laws of Pennsylvania, and we are determined to hold them accountable and protect our communities. This extensive coverage from the Philadelphia Inquirer illustrates the magnitude of the impact across the state: https://lebtown.com/2020/10/15/emergency-plans-fail-to-consider-complexity-of-mariner-east-pipelines-and-those-most-at-risk-in-an-accident/
Right now, we are at a critical juncture. Can you help to financially support our efforts to ensure the safety of the Mariner East pipelines that run through our communities all across the state?
