The American Legion Post 179 Log Cabin is a historic community treasure in San Anselmo. Originally built through community donations and fundraisers to be a home for Post 179 and the BoyScouts, the Log Cabin was finished and dedicated on May 27, 1934. Through community support the Log Cabin continues to this day to bring Veterans, Boy Scouts and Community together. With our bar and rental hall shut down by the global pandemic, we are now asking again for support from our community.
This is a Post 179 update, or if you will, a kind of “State of the Post” report for your review. As I’m sure all of you are aware this situation with the Covid-19 pandemic has had the Cabin in a state of lock-down for some time. And now per recent reports, is extended for a to-be-determined continued amount of time.
We have taken actions to weather the storm, as it were, and here is a summary of what actions have been put in place so far. Initially with the onset of the shutdown we had to close the Dugout and Cabin rentals. These are our major sources of income to support all that we do, as you know. To continue to pay bills and keep the lights on, we cashed our emergency CD and have been living off that for the past few months. Some of our contractors, and employees, i.e. our bar manager and bartenders agreed to volunteer their services, as opposed to being paid when we could open the bar conditionally, which only lasted temporarily. Our accountant, Gloria who has been a true champion for us, is continuing to provide her services, free of charge. And just in case any of you are wondering what has become of Scout (the post Cat in charge of security)? He has been safely staying under the care of Ken Sites, (Post Historian and past Commander). Not sure who I feel sorry for in that arrangement, but Ken stepped up to make sure Scout was taken care of while the Cabin is shut down.
To save money we have also cancelled our trash pick up, janitorial services, and Xfinity/Comcast account until we can get operational again. Lou Shehi has also been exploring and applying for any grants we may qualify for. Even with these cost cutting measures we still have other utility and city obligations that constitute a monthly “burn-rate” of between $1500 - $2500 per month NOT including taxes. We have received some donations from a few members and our community which is very helpful and appreciated very much! But, we are at the bottom of our funds with no new income in sight.
During this month’s Post Zoom meeting we discussed opening a Go-Fund-Me account to see if we can off-set the monthly burn-rate with donations. Additionally, I’m asking for help from our membership. With your kind, tax-deductible support we can continue to survive and strengthen our position to make it through the shut-down and/or other operational restrictions imposed on us by the city and/or state.
If you would like to make a much-needed tax-deductible donation in support of the post and your fellow-Vets, any amount would help and be greatly appreciated.
For your tax records our tax I.D. is 94-0833995.
Your donation would be in keeping with our Post charter: The American Legion, chartered by Congress in 1919, is a patriotic veteran’s organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. As is the American Legion Post 179 is committed to mentoring youth, sponsorship of programs in our community, and supporting Veterans.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’ll do my best to get an answer for you.
Again, I hope all of you and your family are doing well and continue to do so.
