When I was an opera singer, the bulk of my career was spent performing new and recent works. This is because I believe that opera is an important art form which has the power and beauty to tell stories in a way that nothing else can - and that it is important that new stories, and new music, is always added to the canon. I first worked with ALT in 2011, singing in a small workshop meant to show composers different facets of the operatic voice. This led to a number of years of collaboration with ALT at many points along the creation pipeline, from short arias to larger scenes to making recordings of full operas. When I decided to switch careers, ALT's Founder and Artistic Director Larry Edelson asked me to join the Board, where I have now spent 1.5 years working to ensure the continued vibrancy of both this organization and the world of new opera. American Lyric Theater (ALT) is exclusively dedicated to empowering the composers and librettists that are writing the operatic masterpieces of tomorrow. For more than 10 years, ALT has been devoted to cultivating emerging opera composers and librettists in the United States. The award-winning faculty commits up to five years mentoring each Artist in Residence. Since inception, ALT alums have debuted numerous critically-acclaimed operas nationwide and received commissions from companies like the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. During 2018, all contributions will be matched up to $50,000 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation!
