Project One is a nonprofit that works to increase literary accessibility in low-income, underserved youth communities by providing K-12 students Kindle Fires, reading resources, and programming. Reading from a young age exposes children to a wide range of knowledge and experiences, allowing them to explore their interests and broaden their pursuits. It is even said that reading rewires the brain to better empathize with others. We aim to introduce children to the joy of reading and help better prepare them for the world.
The money will be used to bring accessible reading and reading opportunities to underserved kids by giving them Kindle Fires. With libraries closed and COVID-19 at large, public access to physical books and other reading resources has drastically decreased. This has increased the education divide between students who can afford to have private tutors and learning devices, and those who cannot.
The funds will also be used to provide kids with fun reading programs to encourage and reward reading, such as virtual book clubs, summer reading programs, reading mentors, and much more.
The first organization we’re partnering with is Juvenile Court Book Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in San Diego that serves incarcerated youth. Founded in 1996, JCBC runs innovative literacy programs inside San Diego’s youth detention facilities by providing books and learning materials to this underserved population. The Kindles we fundraise will go directly to their Book Club discussions, with the intention of sharing literature, developing reading skills, and meeting new people.
The impact of reading is one that is felt by all of us on the Project One team; much of our younger literary experiences have shaped us into the people we are today. We believe many of you have had similar experiences with reading and we hope that together we will be able to give this same opportunity to these children.
Every little bit helps and we greatly appreciate any donation! To help us get the word out, you can share the link on your Facebook timeline or other social media!
