PhillySUN was founded by three Black femme Philly natives politicized by the threat of privatization when we were in high school. Nearly a decade later, we continue the fight for self determination as mothers, aunties and the core of PhillySUN. Our work grew from a collection of parent stories launched within the Media Mobilizing Project in response to massive closures and cuts in 2013. The School District of Philadelphia claimed that apathy in our communities lead us to that moment, but Voices From Our Public Schools offers a counter narrative. Throughout this citywide listening process we met countless parent volunteers filling the gaps in their schools the district created. Many were seeing the interworkings of their children’s schools for the first time and found there was no internal mechanism to share concerns and solutions. Since that time we have been building and maintaining spaces for collective community decision making in school level parent groups, campaigns against closures, new citywide models and governance structures, and at national education justice conferences. PhillySUN is committed to developing, connecting and sustaining the parent leaders our movements need.
Ebony Baylis, our Citywide Coordinator is bringing her parent leadership to Educational Justice movement spaces and institutions aiming to engage parents and families in their child's education. Ebony is an active member of the Our City Our Schools coalitions's Leadership Development committee as a way to share and implement what we've learned throughout our school level work in sevice of a movement led by young people, their families, school staff and impacted community members.
Zakia Royster-Morris, our School Organizer will continue to build with parents at her daughter's school. After a year of rebuilding Mitchell's School Advisory Council the group has landed on formalizing Restoratice Practices at their School this year. As SAC president she will play a crucial role in reaching this goal at her school and supporting other school communities in their own visioning.
Julia Slater, our Visibility Coordinator will be making sure our entire network stays up to date on what we're doing and how to plug into the work. Julia's knowledge and passion for storytelling as a movement tool is crucial to the PhillySUN team's reflection and accountability.
pep marie, our Fundraising Coordinator will continue to develop their fundraising skills to access resources, financial and otherwise to sustain our work. Through fundraising, paid facilitation support and relationship building , pep is committed to engaging supporters who are deeply invested in our vision for Philly schools.
We are proud to be fiscally sponsored and supported by the Movement Alliance project and to be members of the Our City Our Schools Coalition.
