Side By Side believes everyone matters, and everyone has dignity and worth. This includes an often forgotten and marginalized population - people in jails.
Side By Side supports inmates transitioning out of jails, to help them leave jail and never return. Jails are underserved and challenging to provide services in because the population is so transient - over 200,000 people flow in and out of U.S. jails weekly. This fluid nature is already accelerating the spread of COVID-19, putting inmates, jail staff, and the larger community at greater risk.
In-person transitional programming is currently suspended in jails, which we anticipate:
-Means inmates aren’t prepared for the COVID-19 reality, and/or are even more fearful about release
-Short-term recidivism will increase, thus spreading COVID-19 in and from jails
COVID-19 makes an already challenging transition for inmates exceptionally daunting. Side By Side needs more support to serve this incredibly at-risk population in a time of crisis.
How Side By Side Helps
Side By Side provides pre-release materials and coaching-style communication that equip inmates to release into the COVID-19 reality. Post-release, we’ll provide 1-on-1 video coaching and chat through the rTribe app. Coaching will help clients understand, address, and overcome individual goals and challenges, which may feel insurmountable in present circumstances. Coaches will help clients:
-Not contract or spread COVID-19
-Understand challenges they need to overcome to not recidivate
-Navigate where to obtain physical resources like groceries, housing, cleaning supplies, etc
-File taxes for stimulus check, file for unemployment, apply for government IDs, and social security (all via screen share)
The rTribe app places each person in an online “tribe” of people experiencing similar struggles. With the click of a button on their phone, a person can reach out to their tribe or their coach for support. This access to virtual community will make it easier for clients to stay home, knowing they have support at their fingertips.
Any amount donated will go directly toward providing inmates personalized support so they can leave jail and never come back - even amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
