The last two years, I worked as a Community Economic Development Volunteer with the Peace Corps in a small community in Costa Rica. This past December/January, a family in my community had the opportunity to build a wood-fired brick oven with Bricks to Bread! After the application process, the family was able to raise money and complete entrepreneurial trainings in order to proceed with the build. With help from some incredible American volunteers and the whole Sandi Chanto family, we were able to complete the oven on January 4, 2020. The family currently uses the oven to sell breads and delicious pizzas! This oven has given them an opportunity to own their own business and provide for their families. You can read more about the build here: https://www.peacecorps.gov/costa-rica/stories/knead-dough/
Unfortunately, all builds have been suspended due to COVID-19. There was a build scheduled to start TODAY, April 2, 2020. Bricks to Bread lost thousands of dollars on deposits for lodging meant for the volunteers headed to help with the build. They've also had a really tough time fundraising for three other communities similar to mine that were meant to recieve an oven later this year. Due to the evacuation of all Peace Corps Volunteers worldwide, all these communities are lacking funds to keep the process going.
This cause hits me right in the heart strings. The Costa Rican people welcomed us into their communities and treated us like family for the past two years. Lets see what we can do to make sure the hard work of the Peace Corps Volunteers and communities doesn't fall by the wayside! The foundations for these projects have been put in place. We just need to raise the money to see them through. We can do this! Thank you all in advance for your love and support!
