Tenafly Nature Center (TNC) is a non-profit, independent, member-supported nature preserve located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Since its founding in 1961, TNC has nurtured a crucial appreciation for nature and has been a leader in open-space preservation and environmental education for our community and beyond.
TNC is the largest privately-run nature center in Bergen County, and protects the biggest undeveloped open space in Tenafly (~400 acres). Its seven miles of trails, forest, pond, streams and wetlands serve as an oasis, enabling visitors to connect with nature in the country’s most densely populated state. A sanctuary for visitors, Tenafly Nature Center is an island of green, where bonds with nature can be initiated and renewed. The strategic location provides a welcome stopover for over 100 bird species during their seasonal migrations. Whether one has an hour or a day, TNC offers a peaceful respite from the rush of daily life.
As one of the premier environmental education providers in the tristate area, TNC’s professional Environmental Educators are available for questions from the community and offer a wide variety of programming to over 1,300 groups of area schools, scouts, families, and adults each year. Teaching over 26,000 people annually to enjoy and understand the natural world. TNC staff encourage program participants to utilize their boundless curiosity as they touch, observe and listen to the natural world.
Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic's impact TNC was unable to hold its annual fundraiser. Furthermore, all programs (for schools, scouts, and the public), during their busiest season, had to be cancelled. These delays have significantly affected TNC's income to the extent that its long-term viability could very soon be compromised. The future impact of the Coronavirus on the center are uncertain. #GivingTuesdayNow
Over the last few weeks visitor numbers have shown a significant increase. With families and individuals seeking refuge on TNC's 7+ miles of trails. People are spending much needed family time outdoors, engaging in passive physical activity, and mentally destressing from the seriousness of the world around them.
Proud of its role in the community and the incredibly positive impact Tenafly Nature Center is having on the lives of so many. TNC will do everything it can to keep the trails open for visitors and their health. But, we do need help.
Please help us continue operating our preserve and caring for our wildlife. Consider helping us through this incredibly difficult period by making a contribution to Tenafly Nature Center today and stay safe.
