Please donate to support courageous indigenous elders who have faced 45 years of forced relocation due to fossil fuel extraction!
Your donations will directly help traditional Navajos in their struggle to keep alive their ancestral life ways and deep relationship to the Earth. You will help them continue to resist devastating relocation policies that arise from corporate fossil-fuel extraction.
Thanks to a generous donor, the first $1,000 donated will be matched!
This February, Manzanita High School students have been to return to the remote community of Big Mountain in Northern Arizona to offer hands-on support to Navajo elders and their families. Since 1974, federal relocation policy has forced 14,000 Dineh (Navajo) people to leave their ancestral homelands surrounding Big Mountain. This policy resulted from the political machinations of energy company representatives who sought access to the mineral resources of the Black Mesa region, including coal, uranium, and natural gas. This policy and the coal mining it supports have caused tremendous cultural and environmental devastation. Despite this ongoing governmental policy of forced relocation, many traditional Dineh have remained at Black Mesa during the past 45 years, maintaining cultural and spiritual connections to their ancestral lands by steadfastly refusing to relocate. For more background information, read the article Black Mesa Syndrome by Judith Nies, or watch the Oscar-winning documentary Broken Rainbow, which is dated but informational.
Manzanita School is a non-profit, and after collecting donations through this site we will transfer them all directly to supporting these elders with this list of necessary purchases and costs which was provided us by our hosts in the community:
-A Stihl 270 with extra blades, sharpener and oil.
-Assorted high quality farm and ranch tools.
-Money for auto parts and maintenance costs
-Gas cards to support travel from remote homesites to town for necessary supplies.
-Good quality winter clothes
-Healthy staple foods
-Direct donations to families
Our fundraising will culminate on February 19th as the Manzanita High School students depart on their service-work expedition to the Navajo community of Big Mountain.
