For thousands of years Hindu wisdom has guided communities and people on how to live in harmony and balance with the natural world. We've been taught to respect all life, to recognize that we are interconnected with each other, and that healthy lives start with a healthy planet.
Bhumi Global is a new non-profit organization that builds on the work of an earlier collective effort known as the Bhumi Project. For over 10 years the Bhumi Project spearheaded global Hindu environmental action. It developed resources to make our mandirs 'green', mobilized tens of thousands of people for environmental action, issued the groundbreaking 2015 Hindu Declaration on Climate Change, and firmly cemented Hinduism as a positive force for environmental change.
In early December the Secretary-General of the United Nations declared that humanity has been waging war on nature. For too long, economic growth and development has taken precedence over our responsibility to care for and respect Mother Earth.
Over the past 50 years, we have witnessed record and increasing wildfires, drought and flooding, devastating pandemics, the pollution of our air, rivers and oceans, climate change, and the extinction of 60% of all wildlife.
This doesn't need to be our future.
Bhumi Global is now poised to ramp up and amplify Hindu efforts internationally to address environmental concerns. We are at the start of a new and exciting chapter of national and international Hindu environmental leadership and activism. We ask you to join us and support our work. We're looking for your support to help us kickstart our efforts in 2021.
Here are some key things we’ll be doing in 2021:
A first-of-its-kind online learning portal where people can learn about Hindu environmental teachings and how to incorporate environmentally-friendly practices in their homes, temples and places of work.
Global Hindu Environmental Survey
The first ever global survey on contemporary Hindu attitudes and approaches to environmental care. This data is crucial in order to develop effective messaging and campaigns to encourage increased Hindu environmental action.
Bhumi: A Call to Action
A global Call to Action issued by the Hindu community on the importance of caring for Mother Earth. Endorsed by major Hindu leaders, organizations, communities and individuals, it will be the largest Hindu environmental petition ever issued.
We will continue our advocacy in international forums, such as the annual UN climate negotiations and as co-chair of the UN Multi-faith Advisory Council, to ensure Hindu views and perspectives are heard at the highest places in society.
National Leadership Councils
We will set up Councils in countries with large Hindu populations to develop and coordinate grassroots environmental activism. We will plan to initially work in Australia, Canada, India, the UK and US, with longer term plans to expand to countries like Guyana, Nepal, Trinidad & Tobago, Mauritius, and South Africa
