Please help us raise money to continue to fulfill our mission. We are currently organizing school book distributions and virtual community book clubs. These funds will help us purchase books and school supplies for children in the communities we serve.
The mission of Equity Through Literacy is to empower marginalized communities through literacy by providing collaborative, family-focused strategies to strengthen the connections between literacy and the community. Through the practice of Book Clubs or Family Literacy Strategy Groups, we will bring parents, caregivers, and educators together to interact in metacognitive reading strategies that will help support their children at home. Children benefit tremendously from listening to adult readers read and engage in conversation with them, in any language, daily.
The intentions of our organization are to increase awareness in adult family members of their inherent literacy skills, deepen a connection with literacy in the home, support emerging and struggling readers, close the Achievement Gap and use familial experiences to bring empathy, community, and cultural awareness into literacy.
As a response to COVID-19, we shifted our focus on physical meetings and would like to establish a digital platform to support families as they become teachers from home. We have begun to implement online read-alouds that incorporate literacy strategies and host digital Q&A's for families searching for support. We have also created a podcast discussing current issues in literacy education utilizing the expertise of other educators in response to community needs.
