Help Drag Queen Story Hour Take Over the World in 2020!
In just the past few years, Drag Queen Story Hour has gone from a few big cities to a growing network of more than 50 chapters worldwide. We’re so excited that events now happen across the US and on almost every continent: from Anchorage to Atlanta, Miami to Mexico City, and California's Central Valley to Central Hong Kong. And we’re growing fast!
Building a Global Network
So far, we’ve done all of this DIY-style as a labor of love. But it’s time that we pool our resources so that we can better support each other. That’s why we’re incorporating DQSH as a formal nonprofit: so we can swap resources, apply for big grants, and help all of our chapters thrive. And, we’re especially looking to provide more resources to rural and Red State communities that are on the front lines of fighting for LGBTQ equality and social justice.
Standing Up to Hate
Unfortunately, nearly everywhere we shine the haters follow. We’ve seen everything from protests at events and campaigns to get city councils to cut libraries’ funding, to hateful and threatening comments on our social media. But we refuse to be silenced! Now more than ever we need your help to fight back against anti-LGBTQ censorship and attacks.
How Funds Will Be Used
Dolly Parton was right when she said “it costs a lot of money to look this cheap.” While we make it look easy—and most of our chapters’ programs are free and open to everyone—there are a lot of hidden costs to DQSH. Your generous donation will help us:
→ Pay the administrative costs of incorporating as a US 501c3 nonprofit organization
→ Hire 1-2 part-time paid organizers to coordinate our network of chapters
→ Publish a starter kit with best practices, covering everything from event tips to resources on talking about LGBTQ issues with kids to dealing safely with protests and online trolls
→ Improve our website, outreach, and social media channels so we can spread our message of diversity and joy to even more kids and families
→ Hire a grant writer and develop sponsorships to help us become financially sustainable
→ Build out an Emergency Support & Growth Fund to offer seed grants of $250-500 to chapters (at least 25% of funds raised will go toward this local fund!)
Amplify your donation by posting a message of support—or your favorite DQSH memory or a pic!—with the hashtag #standwithstoryhour and a link to our fundraiser. Anyone who posts publicly with the hashtag on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter will be entered into a CONTEST to win a prize pack of some of our favorite books, to be drawn on December 15, 2019! Download our signs here.
Plus, be sure to mention or tag your local DQSH chapter as well: the chapter with the most “story hour spirit” will receive a $1000 grant right off the bat!
Help us start 2020 with a clear vision: reading is fundamental! Through telling stories, playing dress up, and believing in ourselves, we can turn our fantasies of a more diverse and loving world into a reality!
Note: For now, funds raised are tax-deductible through our fiscal sponsorship with our NYC-based chapter, which is a registered nonprofit organization. However, all funds raised through this campaign are earmarked specifically for our global network and will be transferred once our own organization is formally set up.
