This is a request for those who have been fortunate to enjoy or identify with the majestic Superstition Mountains and the Sonoran Desert landscape that flourishes to the East of the Metro Phoenix area.
Whether experienced on foot or online, it is obvious that this area of tall saguaros, wily roadrunners and secretive Gila monsters is another feather in the cap of Arizona's natural environment portfolio.
But the reality that we all know too well in the Phoenix area is that urban sprawl from East Valley cities rapidly approaches the Superstition Foothills, once thought to be 'way out of town'.
Much of this land is held in trust by the Arizona State Land Department, and therefore subject to auction at any time without guaranteed safeguards for the natural environment.
But development does not have to be an inevitable outcome for the Superstition Foothills. The Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT) has been working since 1993 to realize its mission to conserve the natural Sonoran desert open spaces surrounding the Superstition Wilderness Area. Among its achievements has been a master plan for converting State Trust Lands adjacent to the wilderness into conservation lands, while allowing development to proceed in a controlled manner in areas of less ecological importance. Developing consensus will require working with multiple levels of government and much fund raising.
