FIRE DESTROYS ACTIVITY CENTER FOR AT-RISK SUNRISE YOUTH
On Friday afternoon, January 19, fire unexpectedly erupted and quickly spread through the Activity Center of Sunrise Children’s Services Woodlawn Center in Danville, Kentucky. This was a tragedy for Sunrise’s Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF), one of Sunrise’s six residential treatment centers operated in Kentucky.
Praise be to God that no one was injured as the staff performed beautifully to keep all 27 boys safe. As the smoke and fire engulfed the building, it became clear that the Activity Center would be a total loss. This was both an emotional and physical loss for the boys and staff, as it was used daily for recreational and therapeutic activities as part of long-term, comprehensive care.
“We played basketball in there a lot. Every Friday we went down there and cooked. That was my favorite thing to do. All of our pots and pans and everything that we cooked with are all gone.” Caleb, 17-year-old resident of Sunrise PRTF
“It was the center of our campus. It has been a safe haven. It was the only place on campus that was big enough to house everybody at one time. “ Stacey, Residential Manager of Sunrise PRTF
Sunrise estimates in excess of $950,000 to replace the Danville building and all of its contents. Our goal is to raise $100,000 through CrowdRise.
