Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center is committed to serving the homeless population in Austin, TX throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the outbreak, Sunrise maintained services for those experiencing homelessness in our local neighborhood.
Since the shelter-in-place order went into effect, homeless services in Austin have closed for the foreseeable future. Sunrise along with only one or two other providers remain open and operating. Every week we see an increase of approximately 40 new clients, who are migrating from downtown Austin. We are still providing all of our services, except for physical health as our Community Care service providers are now working on the front lines of testing for the outbreak.
During this time we understand that it is important to remain safe and to minimize the exposure of the COVID-19 to our staff, volunteers and homeless neighbors. However, with the closures of several prominent homeless shelters and food distributors, it is vital that we remain open and operating. In order to sustain our growing numbers we look to you, our community and family to help us. As the economy struggles under the weight of this virus, our donations and resources also wain.
Although we have received amazing support from the Austin community, we need your help to sustain our ever-growing clientele as the coronavirus and economic crisis persists. Sunrise would like to recognize our generous local partners during the COVID-19 pandemic: The Moody Foundation, Glimmer Austin, H-E-B, The Other Ones Foundation, Mobile Loaves & Fishes, One Chapel, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, and the City of Austin.
On average it costs $3.00 per meal. Currently, Sunrise is working with approximately 200 clients a day, bringing our average cost for food to only $3,000 a week! We know that we are an essential service for the homeless community and fully intend on seeing them through this time of emergency. As an organization and a church, we know that God will help us endure and we encourage you to be a part of the efforts.

All of our volunteers remain active in the ministry, but over half of them have shifted their support to preparing food at home, which we have coined the term “Quaranteering.” If you are not considered “at risk” and want to volunteer we would love to have you join our powerhouse of an army! We promise to do our very best to keep you safe through social distancing and by allowing the bleach police to roam free as we work! If you cannot physically come volunteer, we always need people who are to Quaranteer. For volunteer information please reach out to our volunteer coordinator, Sarah Combs, at email@example.com.
