Summer Search recognizes that unexpected expenses have arisen for everyone in our communities with the COVID-19 pandemic, and that associated hardship affects communities that have been historically marginalized in critical ways.
Summer Search’s National Emergency Funding, the Unstoppable Fund, provides Summer Search students and their families with financial assistance to support immediate basic needs and those related to their college or career pathway. In addition, we support participants by connecting them with community resources.
Gifts to this fund will help address our student financial needs that have been exacerbated by the crisis, in addition to ongoing efforts focused on student wellness, mental health, and support services.
Please donate what you can or the suggested amounts below:
$20 – buys basic school supplies to support young people doing their schoolwork from home
$60 – purchases a desk or a chair so that a Summer Searcher can have a designated workspace in their home
$100 – supports a Summer Search family to pay a critical bill for their household during this time
Our high school and post-secondary mentors are holding space for students to process their experiences and frequently asking about their access to basic needs. Mentors continue to be concerned that the needs will be increasing over time in ways we can’t predict the longer this situation continues.
Urgent General needs (for all participants):
-Personal items (toiletries, cleaning supplies)
-Utility bills (phone, electric, gas, water)
-Technology (computer, internet access)
-Books and school supplies
-General need for financial assistance due to loss of job due to employer closing or loss of work
High-School participant-specific needs
-College/certificate/training program deposits
-SAT/ACT dates cancelled – may have $ impact on future options
Post-Secondary participant-specific needs
-Travel to/from college campus
-Storage units for belongings
-Mental health/therapy access – many college students rely on services on campus that are now closed. If accessing therapy not via campus, may be able to do video counseling but depends on insurance; Copays may be a need to help with/sliding scale fees.
-Will students get refunds on room and board? College-by-college basis
