For my 30th birthday, I'm fundraising for an amazing organization local to me and close to my heart - the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund. Simply put, the Fund pays bail for New Yorkers who can't afford it.
Our current criminal justice system is broken. It is broken in many places and in many ways, but one of the most egregious is in cash bail, a system that dramatically impacts the outcomes of individuals awaiting trial based on what they can pay. 60% of people currently locked up in America have not been convicted of a crime. A majority of them simply cannot afford to await their trial dates outside of prison. The results are not unexpected -- defendants stuck in on bail are 9 times more likely to plead guilty to a misdemeanor. Defendants released on bail see a 50% increase in their cases being dismissed or resolved without a criminal conviction.

For my 30th, I'm setting an ambitious fundraising goal of $1,989 in honor of the year I was born. As someone with a relatively small social network, I wanted to do something special to try and increase the share-ability of this fundraiser, so for anyone looking to increase their impact, I'm introducing...
THE @SUBWAYCREATURES MATCH CHALLENGE! -- #SUBWAYCREATURESCHALLENGE
In honor of my own now-infamous presence on the @subwaycreatures Instagram channel, I'm offering a match of up to $10 to any donors who ALSO complete the challenge. The challenge is simple:
-- Post a video of yourself dancing on public transportation, tagging @subwaycreatures and using the #subwaycreatureschallenge hashtag. You can make the video yourself or have a friend record you. Video must confirm you are truly dancing in public -- can't be an empty subway car -- and it can't be two seconds of the Macarena -- I expect you to get down 💃
-- If you complete the challenge, you must pass it on! @mention 1-2 friends you'd like to challenge. To accept the challenge, your friends will need to dance, donate, or both. But only doing both will unlock my match!
-- If you truly don't have access to public transportation where you live, I will accept submissions of dancing in other public places (I assume you all have Walmarts, for example).
-- If you ARE dancing on the subway, you must follow MY RULES aka why I still haven't gotten my ass kicked while I've been doing this basically every day on my commute home: essentially, do not violate other people's personal space. No swinging appendages into other people. No blasting your music - use headphones. For more tips on how to get down on the subway without getting in people's way, follow my Instagram story! @feedthedog
-- For anyone who succeeds in getting their video shared by the actual @subwaycreatures account, I will increase my match to $15! Please note I'm putting a personal limit of $500 for my matches in case this somehow goes viral 😬
If you can't or won't dance, you can still participate in the fundraiser by sharing and donating! This challenge is just a fun way to increase your impact and help my fundraiser reach more people!
