From March 8th to April 8th, 2021, host bake sales (virtual and in-person) along with Subtle Asian Baking (SAB) to raise funds; our goal is to donate at least $5,000 to Welcome to Chinatown's Longevity Fund; this grant will be earmarked for a bakery in Manhattan Chinatown. “As discrimination has intensified over the course of COVID-19, we have also seen Asian businesses impacted more severely, and we’ve seen a much longer recovery relative to other businesses.” - Emily Yueh
Note: We have raised our goal to $10,000! Any funds raised over our $5,000 goal will go to Welcome to Chinatown's sik faan fund; every $10 raised will buy a nutritious meal from Chinatown restaurant to distribute to low-income, senior residents, food-insecure neighbors, and essential workers!
Welcome to Chinatown will pick the bakery/cafe that will receive the Longevity Fund grant by April 2021.
About Welcome to Chinatown and the Longevity Fund
Welcome to Chinatown is a grassroots initiative founded in March 2020 to support Chinatown businesses following the rapid decline in revenue as a result of COVID 19 and increased xenophobia. Welcome to Chinatown is dedicated to supporting the small businesses of Manhattan's Chinatown by offering free resources to generate cash flow, increase marketing presence, and amplify the voices of the community to reclaim its narrative as one of New York City’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Welcome to Chinatown is here to help say, Chinatown will always be open for business.
Chinatown needs your love more than ever. The Longevity Fund is the only relief fund dedicated to NYC Chinatown’s small businesses. Our goal is to raise funding to distribute cash grants to Chinatown businesses who are at-risk based on cultural and socioeconomic barriers.
About Subtle Asian Baking
In May 2020, the founder of subtle asian baking (SAB), Kat Lieu, was reminiscing about her recent Tokyo trip. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling to Asia would be out of the question for a while. Kat dreamed of Japanese baked goodies and desserts. After scouring the web for recipes and inspiration, she created a Facebook group, SAB, where all people can share Asian-inspired baking and dessert recipes and pictures of crave-worthy desserts. Today SAB is a quickly growing community with almost 100,000 members! Members can share Asian-inspired baking and dessert recipes, learn to bake, compete in virtual bake-offs, participate in fundraising activities, and attend virtual bake-along's. SAB's mission is to give back to the community and nurture and cultivate innovation and creativity in a safe, inclusive, and diverse space.
