COVID-19 has infected every aspect of American life. Whether forcing businesses to shut down, making basic items such as toilet paper a rare occurrence on store shelves, or overwhelming hospitals, no one is free from its presence. However, while most of us are staying in our homes to safely quarantine, homeless people don't have that luxury. Students for Happiness is an organization that strives to educate students on societal factors affecting stress and anxiety and provide resources to effectively combat stress and anxiety. We hope that by donating to Austin Street Center, we can not only educate students about the effects of corona virus on the homeless, but also give back to our community.
The homeless were already struggling to survive, but as the COVID-19 epidemic has worsened so has their living conditions. Homeless shelters have been shutting down due to coronavirus concerns, and the few that have stayed opened are overwhelmed with new occupants. Soup kitchens that once provided the homeless with meals are now closing down. Additionally, 50% of homeless people are ages 50 and older, putting them in the high risk category. Toilets that were once accessible are now impossible to locate – toilet paper being even more difficult. Homeless people don't have access to basic hygienic needs, let alone protective gear to defend against the virus. Even worse, donations to homeless shelters have decreased due to benefactors losing their jobs.
This is why Students for Happiness has decided to raise money to buy face masks and hygienic products to then donate to Austin Street Center. Austin Street is a nonprofit organization and is the largest low barrier shelter in Dallas. It serves more than 400 people every day and provides health and mental health services, food, clothing, and employment programs. The coronavirus epidemic has only increased their need for support, so that is why we are asking you to help contribute to this important cause. One hundred percent of all proceeds will be given to Austin Street to help them fight two of our country's most difficult battles: homelessness and the coronavirus epidemic.
We thank you for your support!
