On Monday, April 15, 2019 I am participating in the 123rd annual BAA Boston Marathon, running for the Natick Community Organic Farm!
Since I picked up running about 15 years ago, it has been a goal of mine to work up to the point where I could run a full marathon. After successfully completing 3 half marathons and turning 40 years old, it felt like it was the right time to challenge myself further while also raising money for a very special organization in my home town, the Natick Community Organic Farm.
WHY THE NATICK COMMUNITY ORGANIC FARM?
Since moving to Natick in 2010, the Natick Community Organic Farm (NCOF) has been a special place for my family. The NCOF is a nonprofit, certified-organic educational farm providing productive open space, farm products, and hands-on education to people of all ages, year-round.
MY FUNDRAISING GOAL AND PURPOSE
My individual goal is to raise $6,000 for the Farm. All donations will help support the of hiring NCOF teen work crew to repair their sugar shack, and to create a new sugaring curriculum for local kindergartners. I am also proud to be running alongside 3 other Team Farm runners. Together, we intend to raise at least $24,000 for the Farm. You can visit each of their pages here: Charlotte, Emily, and Heather.
WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MEANS TO ME
Beyond donating for a good cause, your contributions are helping me realize an important personal goal - one that I wasn't sure I would be able to reach. I've suffered from Asthma for as long as I can remember. Because of this, my physical activity was somewhat limited when I was younger. In my late 20's, I finally pushed myself to pick up running - and I immediately fell in love with it. Through my 30's I ran a few half marathons with encouraging results. Then in 2010, my family moved to a house in Natick, right on the Marathon route. Every April, I'm inspired by the thousands of runners that flow past my house at Mile 10. And every year, my children hurry out to the curb to cheer on the droves of marathoners. But this year, I'm proud and excited that they'll also get to cheer for their dad.
ABOUT MY TRAINING
I've been training for the marathon since December 2018. Given this is my first full marathon, I am following the Hal Higdon Novice 1 training schedule which lasts 18 weeks and involves 4 days of running, and 1 day of cross training per week. Click here for more information on the training schedule.
HOW YOU CAN DONATE
General public: Select the "Donate Now" button from this page to help me reach my fundraising goal and support the Natick Community Organic Farm.
Dell Employees: If you are a Dell Technologies, Dell, or Dell EMC employee, Dell will match your donations as long as the donation is submitted via the Dell-managed fundraising site at bit.ly/marathomDELL.
TRACKING MY JOURNEY
When I'm not running, I'm running social media marketing for Dell. So, I can't in good conscience not offer a hashtag for you to follow along with my journey. I will be regularly sharing my training progress using the #maraThom hashtag on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Your comments and engagement will power my runs through the tough winter training schedule.
Thank you for your support!
