Imagine the world without music – no concerts, no singing or whistling, no records, or personal playlists, no radio, no music in movies, no marching bands, no hymns, and no organs at baseball games! Without music, our world would be a bleak place. Music is essential to the quality of life.
Music is one activity that benefits every student, of every age, with every learning style and cognitive ability in any educational setting. It works by improving cognition and increasing social skills, while also encouraging discipline, confidence, and authentic connections. The need for equity in arts education is the underlying reason A Child’s Song exists. Over the past two years, we have been contacted by several different organizations asking for the creation of a program for children with developmental challenges and learning differences. All expressed concern for the lack of music education for both preschool and school-aged children in our community and acknowledged that funding constraints drive this issue.
With the uncertainty of the past few months, many families can no longer afford lessons. A Child’s Song is determined not to turn away students. We provided free Early Childhood classes online through May 2020, moved our in-person classes to virtual zoom classes, and are working with local schools and group homes to bring in music to their kids in creative ways.
