On 5/25 we received a call about a cat who had been brought into East Coast Vet Referral (ECVR) by a good Samaritan who found him on the side of the road—he had been hit by a car. His diagnoses were a broken jaw and mandible (multiple places), and badly damaged eye. One of the eyes had to be removed and the jaw and mandible repaired. His prognosis was favorable. His surgery was 5/26 and he did great, but a feeding tube would be needed for 4-6 weeks as the jaw had to be wired.
Stitch has been progressing well. He stays at VCA Wrightsville Beach Animal Hospital during the week to get the best quality care. He goes home on weekends to an experienced foster, where he is a total lovebug and wants to make friends. He currently has to be in a cage for his own protection. Stitch getting used to his blindspot, but still startles easily at times. He loves getting baby wipe baths!
On 6/10 Stitch went in for a followup and unfortunately, it looks like he will need to have another surgery to remove some residual eye tissue. He is currently taking pain meds and antiobiotics, and anti-inflammatories were recently added. His prognosis is still favorable, with a good quality of life. The cost of the initial surgery was $1300, plus ongoing medical expenses and special food. With the second surgery and follow-ups, we anticipate the overall cost of his care to be approximately $2500.
