I can't believe I'm typing this but...I'm running a half marathon. Just over one year ago, I couldn't run a 5k without stopping to walk. After the Twin Cities 10 Mile I thought, "I could probably do a few more miles". I'm going to need some motivation though, and that's where you come in! If I'm going to run 13.1 miles, I'm going to earn some money for a kick a$$ charity doing it.
The time surrounding my relatively minor (and elective) surgery made me wonder how people survive recovering from more major illnesses and injuries, especially when it's something you aren't planning for. I'm only responsible for myself and two adorable fur-babies and it wasn't easy.
Most Americans don’t have $500 to cover an unexpected emergency, and unexpected emergencies always cost more than $500. They can destroy you financially and crush you spiritually.
That's where Still Kickin comes in. They're a nonprofit organization founded by Nora McInerny and Lindsay Wenner that helps awesome people going through awful things. Inspired by Minneapolis designer (and all-around awesome dude) Aaron Purmort’s life, death and favorite t-shirt, they give a no-strings-attached financial grant to a new "Still Kickin Hero" each month.
Some of their recent Heroes include:
Marissa Xicotencatl, a young woman who, after a debilitating tumor returned for a fourth time, made the difficult decision to amputate her leg.
Andi Emmett, a gun violence survivor who became the sole financial provider for her family after her stepfather attempted to kill her.
Justin Drapinski, a wheelchair hockey league superstar with a neurodegenerative disease fighting for his right to potentially life-saving medical treatment.
They've been able to increase the amount of money they give each new Hero because of people like us. The money I raise will help them keep this organization of theirs running and help them continue to #HelpAHumanOut.
My goal is to raise $500.00 by May 1st. Any amount you are willing to give will help! It all goes directly to Still Kickin. To my co-workers...who knows, maybe someday Still Kickin will help one of your patients!
Better yet, if you want to join the team, ask me how. I won't be breaking any land-speed records but, gosh dangit, I will finish.
If you need some sweet Still Kickin gear, check out https://stillkickin.co/ (I'm partial to the classic crew sweatshirt).
