Things I love, in no particular order:
1) Good friends
2) Great adventures
3) Grand challenges
With three out of three of these traits, Racing Grandma's 1/2 marathon as part of the Still Kickin team was a no-brainer. Add in that I'm raising money for a unique and rad non-profit? Sign me up!
(I signed up without giving much thought to the fact that this means I have to actually run a 1/2 marathon after an eight-year hiatus).
Grandma's half is in June 2020 and I'll begin training in December -- a great time to run long distances in MN. My goal is to raise at least $500 for Still Kickin by May 2020.
To learn more about what this organization does and how they help REAL LIVE HUMANS, read the narrative below:
Most Americans don’t have $500 to cover an unexpected emergency, and unexpected emergencies always cost more than $500. They can destroy you financially and crush you spiritually.
That's where Still Kickin comes in. We're a nonprofit organization founded by Nora McInerny and Lindsay Wenner that helps awesome people going through awful things. Inspired by Minneapolis designer (and all-around awesome dude) Aaron Purmort’s life, death, and favorite t-shirt, we give a no-strings-attached financial grant to a new "Still Kickin Hero" each month.
Some of our recent Heroes include:
Marissa Xicotencatl, a young woman who, after a debilitating tumor returned for a fourth time, made the difficult decision to amputate her leg.
Andi Emmett, a gun violence survivor who became the sole financial provider for her family after her stepfather attempted to kill her.
Justin Drapinski, a wheelchair hockey league superstar with a neurodegenerative disease fighting for his right to potentially life-saving medical treatment.
We've been able to increase the amount of money we give each new Hero because of people like you. The money you raise will help us keep this organization of ours running and help us continue to #HelpAHumanOut.
