Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I write this with tears in my eyes, my heart in my throat and butterflies in my belly. It has been a quiet dream of mine to run the Boston Marathon, so quiet many of you may be surprised to learn of. This city, the people I've met in it, the people who still call it home have undoubtedly played massive roles in forming who I am today. I can't begin to fathom the feeling of crossing the finish line! On April 20, 2020 this dream will come true as I run 26.2 miles through BeanTown with the Brigham Stepping Strong Team. I am so grateful, a little scared and thrilled to have this opportunity! Not only will this be my first marathon, in the city that has a very special place in my heart but the cause I am running for is truly incredible. The missiong of the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation is to inspire collaboartion, innovation and intervention to transform care for civilian and military heroes who endure traumatic injuries and events. Gillian Reny, a high school senior on Marathon Day 2013, was critically injured in the bombing. The amazing work of nurses & doctors at Brigham & Women's Hospital saved her life and both of her legs. A true miracle, like many that spurred up across the city that day outshine tragedy and define: BOSTON STRONG. Thinking of that day still takes my breath away, and I cannot imagine how the Reny family feels in their reflection.
This mission also hits home as a newly-wed to my very own hero, my husband and active duty Marine, Nick. Being married to a hero has allowed me to meet other heroes, some who have suffered and continue to experience their own trauma from their service. The breakthroughs sparked at the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation can address unmet needs of Veterans who have been experienced trauma while serving. I’d be running with those in mind and in my heart whom I know have faced their own trauma, and in honor of their comeback!
To run THIS marathon, for THIS cause is an unbelievable honor. I ask that you lend your support by donating to my team & sharing this cause with your friends & family. On Marathon Monday, we will all be BOSTON STRONG.
Thank you for your support & for your donation. It means the world!
More On The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation:
In 2013, Boston was changed forever when a beautiful Marathon Monday turned into a senseless tragedy. Gillian Reny, then a high school senior, was one of the 39 critically injured patients rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where doctors and nurses saved her life and both of her legs. In gratitude to the Brigham, the Reny family established The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation to help other trauma patients like Gillian regain their strength and ability to step strong once again.
The mission of The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation is to catalyze multidisciplinary collaborations that inspire groundbreaking innovation, effective prevention, and compassionate intervention to transform care for civilians and military heroes who endure traumatic injuries and events. Stepping Strong funded initiatives are making a profound difference for trauma patients and their families worldwide. To date, the center has raised more than $17.5 million. But much more needs to be done.
Trauma is often referred to as the neglected global epidemic of modern society as it accounts for 43 million hospital visits and an economic burden of $700 billion per year. It is the number one cause of death for people 46 or younger, ahead of cancer and heart disease -- and every 3 minutes, someone dies from a traumatic injury. When you support a member of the Brigham Stepping Strong Marathon Team, you are helping the Brigham turn tragedy into hope for civilian and military heroes worldwide who have suffered devastating traumatic injuries.
Thank you for supporting this extraordinary group of runners and continuing to honor the Boston Strong spirit that still defines our city today.
