Well I am at it again, I once again will run the BAA 5K with the Stepping Strong team on 4/13/19 for the third time since my accident n 9/12/2016 when a tractor trailer truck hit me while I was riding my bike. No other trauma team could have given me the care and support I needed; thanks to the trauma care team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I not only survived the accident, I have both my legs.
What makes the team at Brigham and Women’s so different isn’t just their world-class expertise and groundbreaking techniques, but the genuine human care they brought to my treatment. I am a runner in body and soul, yet after the accident I worried that my body would never recover and I would lose that part of myself. One day during an appointment, I told my surgeon, Dr. Harris, my fears. In that moment, Dr. Harris, took my hand and told me that not only would I walk again, but I’d be in a race again…in the BAA 5K on 04/15/2017. He gave me his Stepping Strong band and told me about the team. He made participating in the race part of my care plan. The hope his gesture gave me cannot be measured. I will always cherish this moment as the moment I began to believe that I might someday get my life back. But hope and belief only could not make a challenge like doing the 5K happen. That’s where the physical therapy group at Spaulding Rehabilitation Framingham came in, they were there to push me and to support the hard work that I needed to do if I was going to do the 5k. As way to pay it forward, for the incredible compassionate care I was given, I will be doing the B.A.A. 5K with the Stepping Strong team once again to raise money for The Gillian Remy Stepping Strong Center, which funds cutting-edge research and clinical programs in trauma healing and limb reconstruction.
These programs have helped so many people like myself recover and reclaim our lives and our passions. Any amount of support is greatly appreciated! Thank you for the love, assistance, and encouragement you have given me. It has meant the world to me and I hope I can do a little something to contribute to the work that the Gillian Remy Stepping Strong Center does.
