On April 13th, 7 of my family members and I will be participating in the Boston Athletic Association 5K as part of the Brigham Women's Hospital Stepping Strong 5K Team. This walk/run will occur almost exactly 6 months after my below knee amputation last October. We couldn’t think of a better way to give back to the organization that helped support me in my amputation and to celebrate how far I’ve come in the past 6 months!
The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation was founded after Gillian was injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. The doctors and nurses of Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) worked heroically to save Gillian's life. And miraculously, saved both her legs. In gratitude to BWH, the Reny family established The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation to help trauma survivors like Gillian regain their strength and step strong once again.
The Stepping Strong Center is dedicated to collaborative efforts in trauma research and recovery, and has supported Dr Carty and the development of Ewing Procedure, an innovative modified below knee amputation.
After suffering a traumatic injury in 2011, I had dealt with years of chronic pain, had multiple surgeries and rounds of antibiotics to treat the bone infection in my foot, and had nerve damage that ultimately led to me being non-weight bearing for almost 2 1/2 years. My brother, Ben, connected me with Dr Carty and I was the 10th Ewing amputation paitent. Since my amputation, I am back to being able to walk my dog, do yoga and Pilates, swim, dance with my friends and enjoy outdoor activities with my family! I am forever grateful to Dr Carty and the Stepping Strong Center for giving me the opportunity to get back to living my life it's fullest!
Thank you in advance for supporting my family and I, as we support the Brigham and Women’s Stepping Strong Team; Turning tragedy into hope.
