The COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing guidelines that have accompanied it have changed almost everything about our daily lives, and the changes are still not over. That can be discouraging. Like you, we are ready for things to return back to something approaching normal, even though we recognize that each step takes wisdom, caution, and patience. In the midst of it all, God reminds us that He leads us through the wilderness into the new things He has for us.
Across the country, church leaders are looking for ways to hold prayer and worship services while keeping staff and congregation members safe. Some churches are conducting services online full time, others are holding drive-in services, or hybrids of them to include in-person. Currently, Walnut Grove is using a hybrid method of a parking lot service and online streaming. It is only possible by using a cell-phone hotspot due to the rural location of the church. However, cellular service within the building will not support church service streaming.
As the season shifts from summer to fall, we have started thinking about how to change the structure of the service. When it gets too cold, we are not sure whether church members will want to worship and praise outside. Not knowing how long the effects of COVID – 19 would be around, we started to research what is required to continue streaming services.
Our research has identified only one local internet service provider (ISP) that can support streaming. However, due to our rural location, it will require major construction to complete the connection. A recent survey completed by the ISP concluded that the churches portion of the construction cost is approximately $30,000.00. After several calls and emails in an effort to negotiate a lesser cost, we have determined that it is time to look to God’s people for support.
God works through change. We must change, adapt, and identify opportunities that God has put before us. “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” -- Isaiah 43:18–19, ESV
