This year, in honor of World Refugee Day, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) invites you to join us in a virtual camp out, on any day from June 11 to 20. Our event aims to raise crucial funds for local refugee families and to show our solidarity with the 79.5 million displaced people who have weathered the pandemic without a permanent, stable home.
There are so many ways to participate in this year’s fundraising event. Pitch a tent in your backyard, or explore the beauty of a state or national park in Central Virginia. Host a family slumber party in the living room, or invite friends to a Zoom party. However you choose to join us, share your experience on social media with the hashtag #IRCCampOut, tag the IRC in Charlottesville (@IRCCharlottesville) or the IRC in Richmond (@IRCRichmond), and invite your friends to participate.
Donate to the IRC by clicking the "join" button, and encourage others to sponsor your camp out. Funds raised through the camp out support ongoing programs that help Central Virginia’s refugees achieve economic self-sufficiency and social integration in the community.
*Here’s how your gift can support local families:
$25 – Personal hygiene products, household cleaning supplies, or diapers for refugee families that cannot be purchased using SNAP benefits
$50 – A New Roots garden plot for a refugee family for the 2021 growing season
$100 – Prescription glasses for a refugee adult, a cost not covered by Medicaid
$250 – Personal computer for a refugee family for distance learning, English instruction, and staying connected with friends and family
$500 – Assistance with the naturalization process for one adult seeking U.S. citizenship
$1000 – Emergency rental assistance for a refugee family facing economic uncertainty due to the impacts of COVID-19
We encourage families to use this opportunity to learn more about refugees and the current crisis. Click the "Resources" button above to access book lists for all ages, links to videos and podcasts, and printable signs for your camp out photo.
* Please note: These values are representative of real needs. However, your much-appreciated donation is not guaranteed to directly fund these specific items. The majority of locally-raised funds, including those raised for this event, cover emergency rental assistance and medical expenses not covered by Medicaid, such as hearing aids and prescription glasses.
