After an eye-opening trip to Mathare, Kenya - a slum of Nairobi, Kenya - Jasmine Cook came home and started a federally recognized non-profit, Starfish International. Starfish International's mission is to fund the construction and operation of a K-8 school and community center in Mathare, Kenya. Her belief, and the belief of her board, is that providing a good education to the citizens of Mathare, Kenya is the best way of helping their community. The first step in building a school to serve 500 K-8 students is to buy the two plots of land that the school will sit on! $72,000 will pay for the three plots lands needed for the school. Our hope is to begin the process of buying the land during a Spring Break trip in 2020. Let's get started!
Starfish International Vision Statement
Starfish International seeks to create a safe, welcoming, and accessible learning environment for the community of Mathare, Kenya. We envision funding the purchase of the land and construction of the building and then hiring a director of operations who will implement a curriculum approved by the Starfish International Board and oversee the staff, students, and community members who come to “Little Stars K-8 School & Community Centre”. Little Stars K-8 School & Community Centre will offer learning opportunities for both children and adults alike. To the extent possible, we envision that the operations will be self-sustaining through on-going tuition and fees, but will continue to fundraise for capital improvements and scholarships.
