St Gerard School is fundraising to create a safe space for our students to play and explore. Parents and teachers have expressed concern over the safety of our play structure. Currently the slide has been blocked off due to vandalism. We are unable to find parts to repair the broken slide as our contractor can’t work on the structure because it’s not up to code. Not all children are able to enjoy the structure as the access points make it difficult for anyone with any kind of mobility challenges. Due to the rotting wooden surround, they have created an opening for wasps to build their nests, causing the need to cancel outside recess for the safety of the students.
We want to create an environment that is accessible to everyone at no cost. We aim to create a playground that is accessible to children and families of all abilities. We will create a play structure which will have lower, large platforms to allow for safe, secure climbing for children of all abilities. We feel it is necessary to inspire and promote development by incorporating sensory components which allow children to improve their abilities to interpret sensory stimulation. We will also be adding a basketball court, sheltered gathering area, community garden as well as plant trees and shrubs.
After fundraising efforts are complete we will be able to apply for grant assistance that allows us double our money raised.
