Cassandra (name changed) came to Women and Families Center (WFC) as a single mother working full time making a little more than minimum wage. She depended on food stamps to feed herself and her child. Cassandra expressed interest in the health care field and said her goal was to be self-sufficient and provide a better life for her son. She became a participant in our Open DOHR program in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program in fall 2017. Cassandra also participated in our employment readiness class where she learned the skills she needed to find and sustain a career that pays a living wage (in CT that is $19.08/hr). Cassandra became a certified CNA and secured employment at Apple Rehab in Middletown, CT one month later. Cassandra was motivated and determined to make a better life for her and her son. Cassandra has worked as a CNA for more than one year and in September 2018 she was hired full time at MidState Medical Center in Meriden, CT. Cassandra is no longer receiving public assistance and her family is eating very well. She enjoys her work as a CNA and plans on going back to school to pursue a degree in nursing so that she can provide her family with an even better quality of life.
WFC has been providing high quality programming to the communities of Meriden, Wallingford, Cheshire, Middlesex County and Greater New Haven for more than 100 years. Our mission seeks to promote equity and to empower those we serve to improve their quality of life.
WFC's Open DOHR program empowers young people and adults to secure and sustain long-term self-sufficiency by eliminating barriers to employment.
