Brooklyn Animal Action has been rescuing and caring for homeless animals in New York City since 2010. Our 11th anniversary #ActionCat Walk takes place amidst renewed hope, and we’re going to walk in-purrson once again! This year we’ll be taking our walk around spacious Prospect Park. Because we want everyone to feel comfortable participating, we’re also giving you the same option as last year to “walk” at home!
At 11 am on Sunday, June 13, we’ll be meeting at the Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect Park for a pleasant stroll to benefit Brooklyn Animal Action’s rescue work, while spending some quality time with fellow animal lovers. We’ll finish with a picnic in the park, details to be announced.
For anyone who’d like to participate virtually, lace up your slippers and take a walk around your home! While you’re walking, take a picture or video of you and your family—fur, feather, scale, fin, or human—strutting their stuff and post it to social media and tag us! Tag us on Facebook or Instagram and add the hashtag #actioncat2021.
We’re hoping to go live on social media during the walkathon so you can meet some of the BAA family. Stay tuned for more info!
BAA relies exclusively on donations to fund our lifesaving work. Over the past few years, we have been rescuing and TNR close to 1,000 cats per year. The pandemic has made our walkathon even more important:
-Spay/neuter clinics closed down for many months due to Covid, so we had to use private vets for all procedures for most of 2020. This cost us at least $75 more per cat. Clinics are open again, but we’re still playing catchup;
-Due to the shortage of spay/neuter appointments, routine trap-neuter-return (TNR) slowed considerably; we’re still feeling the effects this kitten season, as more kittens are being born on the street and requiring lots more resources;
-With many New Yorkers (still) out of work and otherwise affected by illness/death due to the coronavirus, more cats have needed rehoming and more friendly cats have been dumped outside, in need of rescue (an unfortunate consequence of more people being unable to care for their animals). Here too, even though things are improving, we’re still dealing with the consequences.
Your fundraising will help Brooklyn Animal Action continue to rescue hundreds of homeless, orphaned and abandoned animals and perform TNR to reduce the population of vulnerable feral cat colonies. So join us! Set up a fundraising page, share with your family and friends, and walk or “walk” with us!
