Spread The Vote, a 501c3 nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to getting IDs for life and providing civic education through our Project ID and Voter Ed initiatives.
An estimated 21 Million Americans do not have the ID they need to access employment, housing, healthcare, voting, and more. Tens of thousands of those are right here in Indiana and now there is help available to navigate the confusing process.
In January 2019, Spread The Vote expanded our Project ID initiative into 5 new states and Indiana is lucky to be one of only 9 states to offer Project ID. Through partnerships with community organizations like homeless shelters, food banks, and free clinics, we obtain referrals for those Hoosiers in need of an ID.
Our volunteers take our clients to get their social security cards, birth certificates, name change, and address documents so our clients can get their IDs to participate in life. Clients like Lisa from the Heart House in Aurora. Lisa left an abusive relationship just before her 5 year anniversary of obtaining sobriety and ended up in the shelter. She needed a good job and to get that, she needed an ID. Our State Director met up with Lisa several times to get the needed documents and now Lisa has her ID, a great job, and is apartment hunting. Without generous supporters, Lisa's story could have turned out very differently.
The average cost of an ID is $40 and that doesn't take into account transportation, translation needs, and other incidental costs associated with the process. Spread The Vote obtained 1000 IDs in our first year....then we got 1000 IDs in 11 weeks. I am excited to say that we have gotten our THIRD 1000 IDs in just under 8 weeks. That is over 130 lives changed per week, not including the ripple effect of how 1 ID can impact an entire family!
Needless to say, getting IDs for life and providing civic education is expensive.
