Those of you who know me well (or maybe not even well at all) know that I do not go outside. This mere fact alone has limited me to donating funds to the Chinatown Bike-a-thon for as long as I can remember. However, in a small silver lining of the pandemic, I am now able to participate by riding my Peloton at home! In lieu of being able to ride the traditional16 miles outside with everyone, I'll be riding at home every day with all the participants from August 2-9. Join my team if you'll also be spinning from home!
So what is the Chinatown Bike-a-thon? Every year, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) raises funds for CPA's youth leadership program, the Chinese Youth Initiative (CYI). CYI provides meaningful political education and hands-on organizing experiences to high school aged youth in the Greater Boston area. This year, CYI is adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic by holding its program completely online. CYI interns are learning history and building a political community to support workers, tenants, and elderly residents. To address the pandemic, we are forming working groups in green justice, housing stabilization, public outreach, and more. Other recent work by CYI youth includes fighting anti-Asian racism with a virtual Intergenerational Town Hall and an Instagram campaign (@covid19feelings).
