My name is Kylie Whalen and I am so excited that I will be running on the Special Olympics Xtra Mile team for this year's 2020 Boston Marathon. I have always had a strong desire to run for a cause that is meangingful to me and I found my reason after my sister introduced me to an inspiring girl, Natalie. My sister, Lilie works with Natalie every day as a paraprofessional at our hometown's middle school. After hearing about Natalie's passion for competing on her Ski Team, Shooting Stars, I wanted to know how I could help the wider community find this joy I saw in Natalie. I respect my sister so much for the work she does day-to-day and I felt a repsonsibility to find a way that I could give back.
The Special Olympics organization gives people like Natalie, with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete, become involved in their community, and learn what it means to be a part of a team. Every human being deserves the chance to experience the thrill and excitement of sports, while learning invaluable life skills like teammwork, communication, and healthy competition. Most importantly, I believe that every individual should have the chance to experience true friendship, the value of hardwork, and personal achievement.
I hope I can help raise money for an organization that is helping a community of people feel involved, included and important through their athletic acomplishments!
Please consider contributing to an amazing cause and I will see you all at the finish line.
