I am honored and privileged to be running the 2020 Boston Marathon as part of the Special Olympics Massachusetts Xtra Mile team.
Special Olympics has been a big part of my job and my life for the past ten years. As the Sports & Fitness Director for LIFE Inc on Cape Cod, we started our local program with 4 athletes and are now up to 80 members who participate in a year round program. During that time, we have been so fortunate to have amazing experiences such as sending athletes to National and World Games, playing basketball at halftime of a Celtics game, playing soccer after a NE Revolution game and visting Hyannisport for a special ceremony honoring Founder Eunice Shriver and the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics movement.
The best experience though is to see the growth and confidence in our athletes both on and off the field. It means so much to them to be a part of official teams and legitimate, big time competition. Anyone who has been to a tournament during any season knows what I'm talking about. They truly compete by the Special Olympics athlete motto "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt".
Next year I turn 50 as well and this is a great way for me to give back to an organization and all the people involved that have inspired me over the past decade. All the money raised will go towards providing year round athletic training and sports competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Please consider donating to help me reach my fundraising goal of $10,000. It is much appreciated and will go to a really great cause!
