Everyone should have a chance to become the best version of themselves, regardless of their life experiences, age, income, or abilities.
This is the fundamental idea that drives our work at Special Lift. For more than a decade, our one-of-a-kind nonprofit organization based in Marin County, California has been empowering people with special needs through fitness, health, and wellness programs provided at our inclusive community gym in Novato. Our facilty houses specialized equiptment and is designed to meet the specific needs of individuals with disabilities.
Our programs include safe and inclusive exercise classes, personalized training, and health and wellness education offered to an average of 50 members on a weekly basis, 80% of whom have Down Syndrome. To date, we have helped hundreds of special individuals lose weight, gain strength, build confidence, enhance their cognitive function and improve their quality of life through consistent exercise, healthy eating habits, and a supportive community. Our ultimate mission is to break social barriers and build more champions by bringing to light the talents, abilities, and untapped potential of our members.
Sadly, the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic has presented us with new challenges we must overcome if we are to continue this important work. The closure of our gym has meant that we have not collected membership fees for several months. These fees typically cover our rent, utilities, and insurance. Now, we have reached the end of our savings. Without financial assistance, we risk losing our gym space, which has been closed since early March. Losing our gym would be a huge setback to our organization and a deep disappointment to our members, who rely on that physical space and the community that exists within its walls to stay well.
Many of our members are experiencing declining health and depression due to the shutdown. The sedentary nature of staying at home and away from friends, makes our exercise and wellness programs more imortant than ever. Thankfully Special Lift digital fitness classes allow for members to remain physically active and socially connected during this challenging time.
We are hoping to raise $25,000 to cover rent and utilities at our gym, as well as help remianing members transition to our new digital platform so they can connect from home. Your financial gift of any amount will help us secure our gym space and provide members with the nessesary devices for high-quality virtual workouts until it is safe to return to the gym. In addition, funds will help provide things like sand weights, dumbbells, and yoga mats for member's at-home workouts.

COVID-19 won’t keep our champions down. With your help, we can find new ways for our members to pursue health, grow their talents, and realize their potential. Thank you in advance for joining us to ensure that we are able to continue to build champions and EMPOWER!
